# Connect AI clients with MCP

Generate an MCP token in Settings → Automation and connect Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code or Codex CLI to your Incogniton account.

Open **Settings** in the left-side menu, click the **Automation** tab and click **Generate MCP Token**. Then pick your AI client under **Install in your AI client** and click **Copy configuration**.

MCP (Model Context Protocol) lets an AI client such as Claude, Cursor or VS Code work with your Incogniton account. You can ask it to find, create or edit profiles, manage proxies, groups and tags, and launch or stop profiles.

The connection runs through the npm package `@incogniton/mcp`. Your AI client starts it with `npx`, so you need [Node.js](https://nodejs.org/) 18 or newer on the computer where the AI client runs.

### Generate your MCP token

{% stepper %}
{% step %}

#### Open the Automation tab

Click **Settings** in the left-side menu, then click the **Automation** tab. Scroll to the **MCP token** section.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Generate the token

Click **Generate MCP Token**. The new token appears in a field below the button.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

#### Copy and store it

Click **Copy** next to the token and store it somewhere safe, for example in a password manager. Incogniton shows the token only once: **Warning: You cannot retrieve this token later — copy and store it now.**
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

{% hint style="warning" %}
Treat the MCP token like a password. Anyone who has it can manage the profiles of your account. Never share it or paste it into a public file.
{% endhint %}

### Replace or revoke your token

You have one active MCP token at a time. Clicking **Generate MCP Token** again creates a new token and makes the old one stop working. Update the token in every AI client you connected.

To stop all access, click **Revoke** under **Active tokens**. When no token is active, the section shows **No active tokens**.

### Add Incogniton to your AI client

Under **Install in your AI client**, open the **AI client** dropdown and pick your client: Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code or Codex CLI. Incogniton shows a ready-to-paste configuration with your new token already filled in, and tells you where to paste it. Click **Copy configuration**, paste it where the app tells you, and restart the AI client.

Generate the token first. If you open this list later, the configuration contains `YOUR_MCP_TOKEN` instead of a token: replace it with the token you stored.

For manual setup in other MCP clients, see the [MCP server documentation](https://api-docs.incogniton.com/mcp).

### What the AI client can do through MCP

After you connect, your AI client can:

* **Profiles:** search, create, edit and clone profiles, and look up the groups, tags, proxies and browser languages you can use for a new profile.
* **Groups and tags:** search and create profile groups and tags.
* **Proxies:** search and add proxies, and search and create proxy groups.
* **Team:** look up team members.
* **Launch and stop:** see which computers can launch a profile, launch a profile, check whether a launch or stop worked, and stop a profile.
* **Cloud phones:** list your cloud phones, create a cloud phone with a proxy from your Proxy Library, and start or stop cloud phones. Phones started through MCP start without a screen.

The full tool list is in the [MCP server documentation](https://api-docs.incogniton.com/mcp).

### How launching works through MCP

A profile always opens in the Incogniton app on one of your computers. That computer must have the app open and logged in to your account.

* If one computer is available, the profile launches there. If several are, the AI client gets the list of computers and you choose one.
* A launch request that no computer picks up within 5 minutes expires.
* MCP can only stop profiles that were launched through MCP. Close a profile you opened yourself from the Incogniton app.

### Control the browser after an MCP launch

MCP itself only opens and closes profiles. It cannot click, type or read pages inside the browser.

After a launch, the AI client can get a local DevTools address (`cdp_url`) of the running browser. An AI client that can run code can connect Puppeteer, Playwright or a browser MCP to that address.

{% hint style="info" %}
The `cdp_url` only works when the AI client runs on the **same computer** as the Incogniton app that launched the profile. It does not work from another computer, or from a client that cannot run code, such as Claude Desktop. It also needs **Allow browser remote control** to be on in the Automation tab. See [Browser remote control](/automation-api-and-sdks/browser-remote-control.md).
{% endhint %}

### What MCP cannot do

These actions are not available through MCP:

* Opening a URL, managing tabs or reading pages in a running profile.
* Checking whether a proxy works.
* Deleting profiles.
* Restoring a profile from a backup.

Cas, the AI assistant inside the Incogniton app, can do these. Open Cas in the app to use them.

### Troubleshooting

* **The client shows no Incogniton tools:** restart the AI client after you paste the configuration, and check that Node.js 18 or newer is installed.
* **The client's MCP log shows "missing bearer token":** the token is missing from the configuration. Paste your token in place of `YOUR_MCP_TOKEN`.
* **Authentication errors:** the token was replaced or revoked. Generate a new one and update the configuration.

For scripts that run on your own computer, you can also use the [local REST API](/automation-api-and-sdks/local-rest-api.md) or the [JavaScript and Python SDK](/automation-api-and-sdks/javascript-and-python-sdk.md).
